“The Nigeria you and I worked for, we haven’t gotten there yet. And I believe it is the responsibility of all of us to ensure we reach the Nigeria of our dreams. Our job is not finished until it is finished,” Obasanjo said, addressing a gathering of political leaders and dignitaries at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja”.

Why This Event Was Important

Sule Lamido has been in politics for many years. He helped start the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and worked hard to bring democracy back to Nigeria after years of military rule. As Foreign Affairs Minister, he helped make Nigeria respected again in the world. Obasanjo talked about how he picked Lamido for this important job because he trusted him and knew he would do well.

Obasanjo also shared a story about asking all his ministers to give him undated resignation letters. This was to make sure they would always do the right thing. Lamido was the only one who refused, saying he would only leave if he was not doing his job well. Obasanjo respected this honesty and confidence.

During Lamido’s time as Foreign Minister, Nigeria’s image improved. The Queen of Britain even visited Nigeria for a big international meeting. This showed that the world was starting to trust Nigeria again.

Messages from Other Leaders

Minister of Information Mohammed Idris praised Lamido for his long service to Nigeria and said the book event was a celebration of his life and work. General Abdulsalami Abubakar, through Prof. Jega, also thanked Lamido for helping Nigeria grow and for sharing his experiences in the new book.

“Our job is not finished until we are finished,” Obasanjo said again, reminding everyone that there is still much to do”.

Obasanjo ended his speech by saying that leaders like Lamido, and all Nigerians, must keep working to make the country better. He said the job of building Nigeria is not finished and everyone has a part to play.

The event was not just about a book. It was a time for leaders to remember how far Nigeria has come and to promise to keep working for a better future.
