Shocking Claim: Orji Kalu Says Politics Gave Him Nothing

Former Abia governor says he lost more than he gained, calls himself a businessman.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has declared that he is not a politician and claims he has gained nothing from politics, despite many years in public office. The senator, who represents Abia North and served as governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2007, made this statement in a recent interview, stressing that his true identity is that of a businessman.

Kalu explained that he was already wealthy before entering politics, and that “Orji Kalu politics” has cost him more than it has given him. He said, “I made so much money under 24. I did not benefit anything from being a governor. I brought the money they used in forming the PDP. Ask any PDP member, I brought most of the money they used in 1998 and 1999.”

According to Kalu, he donated $1 million to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at its founding in 1998 and used his own money to run Abia State as governor. He said the funds came from his business activities, which included importing rice, sugar, confectionaries, and petrol.

“I am the biggest importer of rice, sugar, confectionaries, and the rest of them and I was also selling petrol,” he said.

He also revealed, “I gave President Obasanjo over $1 million to campaign. I gave the party $500 million. The only few people who could have brought money then were TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar, others had no money to bring and that’s the truth.”

Reiterating his claim that he does not benefit from politics, the senator said he actually lost a lot of money while serving as governor. “The Federal Government took a lot of my businesses. So, for me, politics has been more dangerous to me,” Kalu added.

Kalu emphasized that he has always focused on building businesses and creating jobs for Nigerians. He said he continues to see himself as a businessman first, not a politician, and that “Orji Kalu politics” has brought him no gain.

Kalu’s comments come at a time when many Nigerians are questioning the benefits of public service. He stressed that his main aim has always been to help Nigerians through business, not to profit from politics.

“Politics has been more dangerous to me than helpful,” Kalu concluded, underscoring his view that his years in politics brought more losses than rewards.1

In conclusion, Orji Kalu’s shocking claim highlights his belief that politics brought him more loss than gain. He maintains that his true success comes from business, not politics, and insists he remains a businessman at heart despite his years in public office.
