Skales Reveals He Was Forced to Perform ‘Shake Body’ in Police Cell

Singer recounts ordeal after arrest, says inmates demanded performances for better treatment

Nigerian singer Skales has opened up about a harrowing experience where he was forced to perform his hit song ‘Shake Body’ while locked up in a police cell. In a recent interview shared by Zikoko media, Skales detailed how he and his manager were arrested following a dispute with a powerful Nigerian billionaire.

Skales explained that after his manager was arrested, he refused to leave him behind and followed the police to the station. While writing a statement, Skales was told he would also have to spend the night in the cell. Once inside, the other inmates quickly recognized him.

“When I got in there, one guy recognised me and said I looked like Skales. I told him I’m Skales. He asked me how come? If I had killed someone. When I explained what happened, he said that’s how all these billionaires do. He even offered to help me murder him. But I told him no and that he should forget about it,” Skales recalled.

The singer described how the inmates’ leader asked him to perform his popular songs ‘Shake Body’ and ‘Emergency’ in exchange for a better sleeping arrangement. Skales said he performed “shamelessly” and was given a mat to sleep on, a privilege in the crowded cell where most slept on the bare floor.

Skales also revealed the harsh realities of life in a Nigerian police cell, explaining that inmates rely on their families to send money for food, or else they go hungry. After his release, he returned to the cell to buy food for the inmates as a gesture of gratitude.

The ordeal left a strong impression on Skales, who said the experience was both humbling and eye-opening. Despite the difficult circumstances, he chose kindness and refused to let anger or revenge take over.

Skales’ story sheds light on the challenges many face in the Nigerian justice system and the unexpected ways music can bridge gaps, even in the toughest situations. His experience is a reminder of the power of resilience, humility, and staying true to one’s values—even behind bars.
