Rats Take Over Sarajevo: Residents Raise Alarm as Dirty Environment Brings Disease Fears
Overflowing rubbish, dead animals, and poor public services fuel rat invasion as residents fear deadly diseases in Sarajevo

There is serious panic in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as rats have taken over many parts of the city. Many people are now calling this period “the Year of the Rat” because of the large number of rodents everywhere.
Social media is flooded with shocking videos and photos showing “rats swimming in the Miljacka river”, which passes through the centre of the city. Residents are also sharing pictures of “rats running around rubbish dumps and public places”.

Sarajevans are not hiding their anger and frustration. One resident posted online,
“Everywhere you turn, you see rats. The city is dirty and nobody is doing anything about it.” Another person wrote, “Our children cannot play outside anymore. The playgrounds are full of rubbish and rats.”
Many people are blaming the city authorities for not taking action. They say that “overflowing rubbish containers” and “illegal dumping” have become a normal sight in Sarajevo.
Some residents also complain that “dead animals are left in public areas, including children’s playgrounds”, making the situation even worse.
Because of the dirty environment, rats are multiplying very fast. This is causing serious fear among the people because rats can spread dangerous diseases such as leptospirosis, hantavirus, and salmonella.

Health experts are warning that the risk of an outbreak is high, especially for children who play in public areas. A health official said,
“When rats are everywhere and rubbish is not cleared, diseases can spread quickly. People need to be very careful.”
Parents are especially worried. A mother of two children told reporters, “I am scared for my children. I do not allow them to play outside anymore because I am afraid they will get sick.”
Another parent said, “The authorities are not listening to us. We have complained many times, but nothing has changed.”
Many residents are now calling for urgent action. They want the government to “improve waste collection”, “remove dead animals from public places”, and “start a proper pest control programme”. Some people are also asking for “public education on how to prevent rat-borne diseases”.
A local expert explained,
“The only way to solve this problem is for everyone to work together. The government must do its part, and the people must also keep their surroundings clean.”
He added that if nothing is done, “Sarajevo could face a serious health crisis very soon.”
People in Sarajevo are tired and frustrated. As one resident put it, “We pay taxes, but we do not get good services. If nothing changes, we will all pay the price.” For now, the city remains at risk, and the residents are left hoping that the authorities will listen to their cries and take action before things get out of hand.
