Atiku Abubakar Criticizes Tinubu’s Government, Announces United Opposition Coalition.
Former VP Atiku Abubakar condemns Tinubu's administration, vows to hold government accountable and rescue Nigeria

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has launched a strong critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, calling it one of the most incompetent and anti-people administrations in Nigeria’s democratic history. He announced the formation of a united opposition coalition aimed at holding the government accountable and rescuing Nigeria from worsening hardship and authoritarianism.
Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of deepening poverty, promoting elite privilege, and pushing Nigeria into an unsustainable debt crisis within just two years. He highlighted alarming economic indicators, including Nigeria’s ranking as 18th on the 2024 Global Hunger Index and surpassing war-torn Sudan in child malnutrition rates, calling it a national shame.

He criticized policies that hurt the poor while benefiting the wealthy, such as the 75% increase in National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) fees and higher tuition in public universities, which marginalize low-income families.
“No previous administration has inflicted this level of hardship on the masses while showing such disregard for transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership.”
Atiku further warned, “We are seeing a dangerous shift toward a class-based society. The wealthy now enjoy VIP services in healthcare, education, and identity management, while the rest are left to fend for themselves.”
He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s rising public debt, which he said increased from N49 trillion in 2023 to N144 trillion in two years, accusing the federal government of reckless borrowing to fund elite-focused budgets and cover the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
Atiku praised state governments for fiscal discipline but blamed the federal government for driving the debt crisis.
The former Vice President vowed that opposition parties would no longer remain silent amid what he described as democratic backsliding and economic injustice. He emphasized efforts to build a strong, united opposition coalition to challenge the Tinubu government and prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
“As opposition leaders and partners committed to Nigeria’s future, we will not stand by and watch democracy be reduced to a tool for elite control, We are here to rescue Nigeria. And we will not stop until that goal is achieved.” Atiku said.
Atiku’s statement marks an increase in political pressure on the Tinubu administration, with opposition parties intensifying their rhetoric and organizing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
