Three Kebbi Senators Leave PDP for APC

Senators say PDP’s problems forced them out, while APC offers better hope for their people and Nigeria

Three senators from Kebbi State-Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)-have officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Their decision was announced during a Senate meeting on Tuesday, and it has drawn attention across Nigeria because of what it means for politics in the country.

the senators explained in the letter that PDP is full of internal fighting, confusion, and court cases that have divided the party.

The three senators said they left PDP mainly because the party has too many problems that it cannot solve. In their letters to the Senate, they explained that the PDP is full of internal fighting, confusion, and court cases that have divided the party. They believe the party no longer understands or represents what ordinary Nigerians want.

i made this decision after thinking deeply, talking to many people, and looking at the current situation in Nigeria and Kebbi State‘, Senator Adamu Aliero said. He said, “The PDP, as it currently stands, has become disconnected from the aspirations of the very Nigerians it seeks to lead. Internal divisions, lack of ideological clarity and inability to provide a credible forward-looking agenda have made it difficult for leaders like me to pursue the reform and development agenda that our people deserve”.

Senator Yahaya Abdullahi also pointed out that he had left APC in 2022 because of disagreements in his state, but those problems have now been solved by the new governor.

He said he feels happy to return to APC, a party he helped to build, and that it is now important for him to support President Bola Tinubu’s government.

“the crisis in PDP and the fact that APC’s ideas now match his own political goals made him leave’, Senator Garba Maidoki said. He wants to fully support the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Tinubu, which he believes will benefit his senatorial district and Nigeria as a whole.

The senators’ decision was made public during a Senate plenary session. The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, read their letters to the whole Senate. The event was attended by top APC leaders, including the National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris.

Before the announcement, the three senators had met with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, along with APC leaders. This meeting helped finalize their decision to join the ruling party.

When the news was announced, the Senate chamber became noisy for several minutes. Many APC members cheered as the senators crossed over to the majority side. The defections increased APC’s seats in the Senate to 68, making the party even stronger in the National Assembly. Now, the Senate has 68 APC members, 30 PDP members, five from Labour Party, two from the Social Democratic Party, and one each from NNPP and APGA.

The Senate now have 68 APC members, 30 PDP members making the party even stronger in National Assembly.

The defections are seen as a big blow to the PDP, especially in Kebbi State, and a major boost for APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate Leader, “nobody was forced to join APC“, Opeyemi Bamidele said. He described the move as part of democracy, where politicians are free to choose the party that matches their goals and allows them to serve their people better.

the senators were not just defecting, but returning to their roots since they were among the founders of APC“, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin said. He called it a “homecoming” and said it shows that APC is growing stronger.

For Kebbi State, the defections mean that all its senators are now in the ruling party, which could help them bring more benefits and development to their people. Senator Maidoki, for example, said that when he became senator, many villages in his area were suffering from attacks by bandits. He praised the APC government for sending security forces, which has helped restore peace and allowed people to return to their farms.

For Nigeria, the move shows how the political landscape is changing. More opposition lawmakers are joining APC, making the ruling party even stronger. This could affect how laws are made and how government policies are carried out in the future.

The three Kebbi senators left PDP because of the party’s ongoing crisis and because they believe APC is now better able to help them serve their people and Nigeria. Their move has made APC stronger in the Senate and may encourage more politicians to switch parties as the 2027 elections approach.
