Felix Agu Embraces Super Eagles Call-Up to Reconnect with His Nigerian Heritage
Bundesliga Defender Says Playing for Nigeria Fulfils His Family’s Dream and Brings Him Closer to His Roots

Felix Agu, the talented defender for Werder Bremen in Germany, has finally opened up about his decision to play for the Super Eagles, saying he made the switch to “connect with my Nigerian roots.” Agu, who was born in Germany to a Nigerian father, said representing Nigeria is “a dream come true” and means a lot to him and his family.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in London ahead of the much-anticipated Unity Cup, Agu could not hide his excitement.
“It is a great feeling to represent Nigeria, such a big country, and like I said before, it is to connect with my Nigerian roots from my father’s side,” Agu said, beaming with pride.
The 25-year-old defender was recently given the green light by FIFA after the German Football Federation confirmed that he had never played any official games for Germany, either at the senior or junior levels. Agu only played “two friendly matches for Germany’s U21 team back in 2019,” making him eligible for Nigeria.

Now, Agu is focused on making a mark with the Super Eagles. He said,
“My experience so far has been good. I have had two training sessions now, a very warm welcome, and great guys here. I’m looking forward to the game; it is beyond a friendly game because of the rivalry. We have prepared well, and I hope we have a good game against them (Ghana).”
Agu’s decision to play for Nigeria was not just about football. He said he has always admired Nigerian football legends, especially Jay Jay Okocha. “I look up to him,”

Agu confessed, saying Okocha’s skills and achievements inspired him from a young age.
But Agu’s love for Nigeria goes beyond football. He revealed that he enjoys Nigerian music, listing
“Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Davido” as some of his favourites. He also loves traditional Nigerian dishes like “jollof rice and plantain,” saying, “Jollof rice and plantain is always a hit for me, anytime, any day.”
Agu’s impressive performance for Werder Bremen this season has caught the attention of many. With “22 appearances and 3 goals in the Bundesliga,” he has shown that he is not just a defender but also a player who can contribute to attack. His “speed, versatility, and determination” have made him one of the most promising players in the league.

Many football fans and analysts believe that Agu’s arrival will “strengthen the Super Eagles’ defence.” His ability to play in different positions at the back gives the coach more options and flexibility. As Nigeria prepares for the Unity Cup and other important matches, Agu’s presence is seen as a big boost.
Agu said he is not taking this opportunity for granted. He wants to help the Super Eagles win trophies and make Nigerians proud. “I am here to give my best and help the team achieve great things. I want to win trophies with Nigeria and make my family and the country proud.”
As Agu settles into the Super Eagles camp, he is already feeling at home. The “warm welcome from his teammates and coaches” has made the transition smooth. Agu is looking forward to wearing the green and white jersey and giving his all on the pitch.
With his passion for Nigerian culture, love for football, and determination to succeed, Felix Agu is ready to write a new chapter in his career and help take Nigerian football to greater heights.
