Trump Claims Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks to Start Soon After Phone Call with Putin

US President says both countries ready to discuss ending war, but Russia stays cautious

United States President, Donald Trump, has announced that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War” after a long phone call with Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

The phone conversation, which lasted almost two hours, is the third time both leaders have spoken since Trump returned to office in January. According to Trump, the discussion was in a “very good spirit” and he is hopeful that peace is now possible.

Quoting his post on his Social platform, Trump said:

“The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.”

He also mentioned that Russia wants to do large-scale trade with the United States once the war ends, saying,

“There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED.”

Trump added that Ukraine can also benefit from trade if peace returns.

However, President Putin sounded more careful in his own statement. Speaking to Russian media, he described the call as “frank and substantive” and said he made Russia’s position clear.

President Putin sounded more careful in his own statement.

“The US president expressed his position on the secession of hostilities, ceasefire, and from my end, I have emphasised that Russia stands for peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis.”Putin stated:

He added that both countries need to “outline the most effective routes of moving towards peace.” Putin also thanked Trump for helping to restart direct talks.

Despite the positive words, no specific date or details were given about when fighting will actually stop. Trump’s claim that talks will start “immediately” is more optimistic than Putin’s careful language. The Russian leader only agreed to work on a “memorandum of a possible future peace agreement.”

Trump said he has already informed several world leaders about his call with Putin, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. He also claimed that the Vatican, represented by the Pope, is interested in hosting the talks, which could give the process more moral support.

This move comes after a tense period in US-Russia relations. Trump had earlier promised to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office, but progress has been slow. In previous months, Trump expressed frustration with Russia’s actions and even threatened to impose a 50% tariff on countries buying Russian oil if Moscow refused to agree to a ceasefire.
