Trump Gives TikTok Another Lifeline in America: Deadline Extended Again
US President Donald Trump pushes back ban, says Nigerians and Americans can keep using app for now

President Donald Trump has decided to give TikTok more time in the United States. The popular video app, which is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance, was supposed to be banned if it was not sold to an American buyer by a certain date.
But Trump has now said he will “sign an additional Executive Order this week to keep TikTok up and running.” This is the third time he has done this since becoming president again in January 2025.
A spokesperson for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, said the new extension will last 90 days. She explained,
“This extension will ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”
Many people in Nigeria and around the world also use TikTok, so this decision affects them too.
The US Congress passed a law last year saying TikTok must be sold or it will be banned. This is because many leaders in America are worried that the app could be used by China to spy or influence politics.

Former President Joe Biden signed the law, and the Supreme Court agreed with it. Still, Trump keeps giving TikTok more time.
Trump told reporters, “We’ll probably have to get China approval. I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.” He also said he has the legal power to keep extending the deadline.
Trump has a special interest in TikTok. He tried to force a sale in 2020, but now he says the app helped him win over young people in the 2024 election.
“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok, because I won youth by 34 points,” Trump said in December. However, most young voters actually supported Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate.
Some experts say a ban may never happen. “What ban? There is nothing ‘looming’ about the potential TikTok ban anymore,” said Forrester analyst Kelsey Chickering.
TikTok is even launching new features, showing they are not worried about being banned.
There are still talks about selling TikTok to American companies. Trump is open to seeing it sold to Oracle, a big American tech company.
Other people interested in buying TikTok include billionaire Frank McCourt, businessman Kevin O’Leary, and even the famous YouTuber MrBeast.
TikTok will keep working in America for at least another three months. Trump wants to make sure the app is sold, not banned, so that millions of users—including Nigerians—can keep enjoying it. “The American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure,” the White House says. But until a deal is done, TikTok’s future in America is still not certain.
