Tottenham Sack Manager Despite Europa League Win – Chairman Levy Opens Up

Postecoglou’s Trophy Not Enough as Spurs Seek New Direction

Tottenham Hotspur have taken the bold step of sacking manager Ange Postecoglou, even after he led the club to a historic Europa League triumph, their first major trophy in 17 years. The dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in last month’s final not only ended a long trophy drought but also secured Champions League football for the upcoming season.

However, the club’s poor run in the Premier League, where they finished a disappointing 17th with 22 defeats—the worst record by any team to avoid relegation—proved to be the decisive factor in the board’s move to seek a new direction.

Club chairman Daniel Levy spoke openly about the decision, describing it as “emotionally difficult” but necessary for Tottenham’s ambitions.

“I’m very grateful to Ange. I don’t regret appointing Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were over the moon to win a trophy, but we need to compete in all competitions. We felt that we needed a change,” Levy told the club’s official media channels.

He made it clear that the decision was not his alone, but was the result of careful consideration by the entire club management.

“It was a collective decision. It wasn’t my decision. We do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.”

Levy also assured that Postecoglou and his family will always be remembered and welcomed at Tottenham.

While the Europa League success brought joy to fans and players, the club’s struggles in the Premier League could not be ignored.

Tottenham’s board is determined to build a team capable of challenging for honours both domestically and in Europe, and they believe a change in leadership is essential to achieve this goal.

Following Postecoglou’s departure, Tottenham acted swiftly to appoint a new manager. Thomas Frank, the former Brentford boss, has been chosen as the man to lead the club forward.

The club’s new chief executive, Vinai Venkatesham, explained the thorough process that led to Frank’s appointment.

“We ran a really, really thorough process—at speed,” Venkatesham said.

“We defined 10 characteristics that we think are important to be a successful manager at Tottenham Hotspur, we analysed in real detail, through our technical staff, more than 30 candidates.”

He added, “We had a lot of time with the shortlist and Thomas was absolutely the number one candidate. We could not be more excited to have him join the club.”

Venkatesham highlighted Frank’s reputation as an outstanding developer of young players, a quality that is seen as vital for Tottenham’s long-term success.

The club is confident that Frank’s leadership will help improve the squad and bring a new era of consistency and competitiveness to the team.

Frank has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2028, signaling Tottenham’s commitment to stability and progress.

Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou was driven by the need for greater consistency across all competitions. While his achievements in Europe will not be forgotten, the club’s board believes that a fresh approach is necessary to achieve their broader ambitions. With Thomas Frank now at the helm, Tottenham fans are hopeful that the club is set for a bright future on both the domestic and European stages.
