President Bola Tinubu has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to open its doors wider and welcome even more members from opposition parties. Speaking at the APC National Summit held in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu praised the recent wave of defections into the ruling party, describing it as a sign of APC’s growing strength and appeal.

President Tinubu, who has been at the center of Nigeria’s political discussions, said he is pleased with the number of politicians leaving their former parties to join the APC. He encouraged the party’s leaders and members to continue making the APC attractive to others, especially those who feel left out or dissatisfied in their current political homes.

He addressed critics who have accused his government and the APC of trying to create a one-party state due to the many defections. Tinubu dismissed these claims, saying that people are simply looking for a better place to belong. According to him, it is natural for politicians to leave a party that is struggling and seek a new beginning with a party that is doing well.

In his words, President Tinubu said,

“You don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jacket. I am glad of what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That’s the game. We are in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and freedom of association is not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives, sweep them clean.”

The President’s statement comes as several key opposition figures have recently joined the APC, making headlines across the country. Many of these new members say they are attracted by the party’s vision and the leadership of President Tinubu.

At the same event, the APC National Working Committee, led by the National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, officially endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office. This endorsement was supported by the National Assembly, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio moving the motion and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, seconding it. They declared Tinubu as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, showing strong unity and confidence in his leadership.

The APC National Summit was attended by party leaders, lawmakers, and supporters from across the country. The mood was one of celebration and optimism, with many expressing hope that the party will continue to grow stronger as more people join its ranks.

Political observers say the wave of defections could change the face of Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 elections. Some believe that if the trend continues, the APC could become even more dominant, while others warn that a lack of strong opposition could weaken democracy.

Despite the debates, President Tinubu remains focused on building a bigger and more united APC. He urged party members not to be distracted by criticism but to keep working hard to make the party a home for all Nigerians who want progress and stability.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on the APC and how it manages its growing numbers and internal unity. For now, President Tinubu’s message is clear: the doors of the APC are open, and everyone willing to join the progressives is welcome.
