The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has destroyed a large amount of imported products

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has destroyed a large amount of imported products-such as tyres, electrical cables, steel doors, and spark plugs-that did not meet Nigeria’s safety and quality standards. These products, worth billions of naira, were found to be unsafe for use and posed serious risks to people’s lives and property.

SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, explained that tyres, whether new or used, expire after four years. Using tyres beyond this period or storing them improperly can lead to accidents, as old or poorly stored tyres are more likely to burst. He warned Nigerians not to buy or use expired or smuggled tyres, especially the used ones known as “Tokunbo,” because they are more likely to fail and cause crashes.

Dr. Okeke urged consumers to always check the expiry date before buying tyres and to report any suspicious or substandard products to SON offices or through their toll-free number. He emphasized that SON is committed to removing dangerous goods from the market and will continue to enforce standards to keep Nigerians safe. He also warned importers, manufacturers, and traders that bringing substandard products into the country will not be tolerated.

This action is part of SON’s responsibility under the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which gives the agency the power to regulate and enforce standards for products sold in Nigeria. The destruction of these goods sends a strong message that SON will not allow dangerous or low-quality products to remain in the market.
