Singer Speed Darlington Says Viral Confession Was Fake, Apologises for Misleading Fans.
Controversial singer says viral confession was a publicity stunt to promote new music

Nigerian singer and internet personality Speed Darlington, known for his controversial style, has apologised after facing huge backlash for a viral video in which he seemed to confess to having sex with a 15-year-old girl. The video, which quickly spread across social media, showed Speed Darlington describing in detail an alleged incident with a teenage girl at a hotel, sparking anger and calls for his arrest from the public and authorities.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) responded to the video, launching an investigation and urging anyone with information to come forward. The DSVA called the video “deeply disturbing” and said it had referred the matter to NAPTIP since the location of the alleged incident was not specified.
Public Apology and Explanation
In a follow-up video posted on his Instagram page, Speed Darlington claimed that the confession was not real but was instead a publicity stunt to promote his latest song. He explained that as an entertainer, he uses controversy to get attention and bookings, insisting that the remarks were just “cruise” and never meant to be taken seriously.
“All my followers pissed off about the video I recorded in which I spoke about me sleeping with a 15-year-old, I am an artiste. I need controversy to eat. If you are not trending, you are not getting booked. Simple! Nobody is booking something that is not trending,” he said.
He added that his new song contains explicit content and that he needed something controversial to help promote it. Speed Darlington apologised to his fans and anyone who was offended by the video, saying, “If any of you are offended, it’s alright. Apologies”.

Previous Controversies
This is not the first time Speed Darlington has been involved in issues related to minors. In 2022, he was accused by a neighbour of getting too close to a 16-year-old girl, and in 2023, he openly said he was looking for a girlfriend between the ages of 16 and 20, which also drew criticism from the public. These past incidents have added to the concerns about his behaviour and the seriousness of his recent video.
Investigation Continues
Despite his apology and claim that the confession was fake, the authorities are still investigating the matter. The DSVA and NAPTIP have asked the public to provide any information that could help with their investigation, showing that such claims are taken very seriously in Nigeria, regardless of whether they were intended as jokes or publicity stunts.
Public Reaction
Many Nigerians remain angry and disappointed, saying that using such a sensitive and serious issue for publicity is wrong and could have dangerous effects. Some believe that even if the story was made up, it should not be used to promote music or gain attention.
