Pope Leo XIV Becomes First American Pontiff, Calls for Unity and Compassion at Vatican Inauguration.

Robert Francis Prevost’s Historic Election Marks New Chapter for the Catholic Church

ROME—In a ceremony filled with tradition, hope, and global attention, Leo XIV was officially inaugurated as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, May 18. The former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old Chicago native with deep roots in Peru, becomes the first American and the first member of the Order of Saint Augustine to lead the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics. His election follows the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, and comes at a time when the Church faces calls for unity, compassion, and renewed attention to social challenges.

The inauguration began with Pope Leo XIV’s tour of St. Peter’s Square in the white Popemobile, where he greeted over 200,000 pilgrims, dignitaries, and religious leaders from around the world. The crowd erupted in chants of “Viva il Papa!” as he received the Ring of the Fisherman and the pallium—symbols of his new role as shepherd of the Church. In a Mass that blended ancient rituals with modern meaning, Leo XIV prayed at the tomb of St. Peter before presiding over the outdoor celebration.

Pope Leo XIV led the Regina Caeli prayer in St. Peter’s Square on May 18, 2025, following the Holy Mass that marked the official start of his pontificate, offering prayers for peace and remembering those suffering from war in places like Gaza, Myanmar, and Ukraine.

During his homily, the new pope emphasized the need for unity and humility, telling the faithful, “I approach you with fear and trembling, not as a ruler, but as a brother.” He called on Catholics everywhere to “advance together, united and hand in hand with God,” and urged the Church to walk towards God and love one another. Reflecting on the legacy of his predecessor, Leo XIV said, “We still hear the voice of Francis, who taught us to care for the poor and the Earth. Let us continue his mission with hope and courage.”

Leo XIV’s background is as diverse as it is dedicated. Born in Chicago to Franco-Italian parents, he became an Augustinian friar in 1977 and was ordained in 1982. He spent decades as a missionary and educator in Peru, eventually becoming Bishop of Chiclayo and later a Vatican official overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide. His work among marginalized communities and his commitment to social justice have earned him respect across continents.

The new pope’s election was historic in many ways. The conclave, which lasted less than 24 hours, saw 133 cardinals choose Prevost as a compromise candidate who could bridge divides within the Church. Supporters from the United States and Peru waved flags in St. Peter’s Square, celebrating his unique ties to both nations. World leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, attended the Mass, highlighting the pope’s global significance.

Pope Leo XIV has already outlined some of his priorities: continuing Pope Francis’s focus on poverty, climate change, and the needs of migrants, while also reaching out to conservatives who felt sidelined in recent years. He pledged not to govern as an autocrat, but to uphold the Church’s traditions and foster dialogue among all Catholics. In his closing prayer, he expressed deep concern for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and called for “negotiations for a just and lasting peace to finally happen.”

As he begins his papacy, Pope Leo XIV faces challenges both inside and outside the Church, from internal divisions to global crises. Yet his message is clear:

“Let us walk towards God and love one another. United, we can meet the challenges of today’s world with faith, hope, and compassion.”

With his unique background and commitment to unity, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church—one rooted in humility, service, and the shared journey of faith.
