NITDA Opens New Community IT Centre in Akesan, Lagos
Centre to Improve Digital Access and Create Opportunities for Youths and Residents

Akesan, Lagos – May 16, 2025 – The people of Akesan community in Lagos State witnessed a historic event today as the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, officially commissioned a new Community Information Technology (IT) Centre.
This important project is part of NITDA’s efforts to support digital development in communities across Nigeria, especially in areas that have limited access to computers, internet, and digital training.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Director General said the IT Centre is not just a building, but “a bold step towards unlocking opportunities and bridging the digital divide.” He explained that the goal is to make sure that every Nigerian, no matter their location or background, can benefit from digital technology.
“Today is a special day not only for Akesan but for the entire country,” Mr. Inuwa said. “This Community IT Centre represents hope. It shows the government’s strong commitment to making sure everyone can access the benefits of the digital world.”
The newly built facility is equipped with modern computers, internet access, and training tools. It will provide services such as computer training for youths, digital skills workshops, access to online learning, and support for small businesses who want to use technology to grow.

The commissioning event was well-attended by important dignitaries and community members. Representing the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy was Mr. Johnson Bareyei, Director of E-Government at the Ministry. Also present was Mr. Marufudeen Adeniyi Sittu, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Administration at Lagos State University of Education, who represented the university’s Vice Chancellor.
Several community leaders, youth groups, and stakeholders from both government and private sectors also came to show their support and appreciation for the project.

According to Mr. Inuwa, the centre will be managed in collaboration with local authorities and trained staff to ensure it remains active and useful to the people of Akesan and surrounding communities.
“We are building more of these centres across the country,” he added. “This is in line with the federal government’s plan to use digital innovation to fight poverty, reduce unemployment, and promote inclusive growth.”

Local residents, especially the youth, expressed excitement about the centre. Many believe it will open doors to learning, jobs, and entrepreneurship. A community youth leader said, “We now have a place where we can learn computer skills and even connect with people around the world. This is something we’ve been waiting for.”
The new Community IT Centre in Akesan is expected to begin full operations in the coming weeks. It stands as a shining example of how digital infrastructure can transform lives and build a better future for communities in Nigeria.
