Elon Musk Frowns at Trump’s New Tax and Spending Bill

Billionaire Tech Boss Says New US Budget Plan Destroys Cost-Cutting Efforts and Increases National Debt

There is serious drama in America’s political scene as billionaire tech boss, Elon Musk, has come out to strongly criticise President Donald Trump’s latest tax and spending bill. The bill, which Trump proudly calls his “big, beautiful” plan, narrowly passed the House of Representatives last week and is now heading to the Senate for further debate.

Musk, who was once one of Trump’s closest allies and even led the government’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), did not hide his disappointment.

In a recent interview with CBS News, Musk said,

“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

The new bill is a major part of Trump’s agenda. It promises multi-trillion dollar tax breaks, more money for defence and border security, and funds for mass deportations. But experts and the Congressional Budget Office have warned that it could add as much as $3.8 trillion to the US national debt by 2034.

Musk, who was brought in to help cut government spending and reduce waste, said the bill is doing the exact opposite of what he was hired to do.

Musk explained that when he joined DOGE, his target was to save the government at least $2 trillion by cutting unnecessary spending, shutting down agencies, and laying off thousands of federal workers.

He said, “DOGE’s cuts—which often proved unpopular and led to Musk’s private interests being targeted by critics—were expected by the Tesla CEO to axe around $1 trillion in spending.”

But now, he fears all that hard work will be wiped out by Trump’s new bill.

The billionaire did not stop there. He also joked about Trump’s favourite nickname for the bill, saying, “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both—personal opinion.” This comment has been trending online, with many Americans debating whether Trump’s plan is really as good as he claims.

Musk’s criticism is a big deal because he was once a key player in Trump’s government, even attending high-level meetings and helping to shape policy. But after facing backlash from Tesla investors and protests over his government role, Musk announced he would be stepping back from politics and focusing more on his business.

He recently told Bloomberg, “In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future. I think I’ve done enough.”

The bill itself is facing opposition from not just Musk, but also some Republican lawmakers who are worried about the rising deficit and the size of the spending. One GOP senator, Ron Johnson, is even pushing for more cuts to balance the books.

There are also concerns about the bill’s plan to cut Medicaid, roll back clean energy tax credits, and make Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent.

Musk’s work with DOGE was not without controversy. The department’s aggressive cost-cutting led to the closure of 11 federal agencies and about 250,000 job losses, with DOGE claiming to have saved taxpayers $160 billion so far.

However, some experts say government spending is still rising, and critics have questioned the true impact of Musk’s reforms.

Despite all the noise, Trump and his supporters insist the bill will boost the economy, create jobs, and put more money in people’s pockets. They say the tax breaks and increased defence spending are needed to keep America strong.

But for Musk, the numbers don’t add up. He warned that the bill will “rapidly wipe out the cost efficiencies that cost Musk and Tesla dearly.”

He ended his interview by saying, “In the grand scheme of things, I think we’ve been effective. Not as effective as I’d like. I think we could be more effective. But we’ve made progress.”

As the bill moves to the Senate, all eyes are on Washington to see if Trump’s “big, beautiful” plan will survive or if more changes are coming. For now, Musk’s bold words have sparked a fresh debate about America’s future and the real cost of big spending.
